There’s nothing better than picking out a great movie, prepping your sesh during the opening credits, and smoking during the trailers. Whether it’s bud or edibles, cannabis can provide an enhanced viewing experience for most films.
Below are some of the best movies to watch while stoned and some great strains that pair nicely with them.
Superbad is a classic stoner flick. Not necessarily because the characters are potheads or smoke weed, but because it’s the perfect movie to watch while high. Superbad pairs perfectly with indicas and hybrids that leave you feeling happy and giggly. You’ll be glued to the couch and laughing every other second.
Superbad follows three friends in high school doing their best to score some alcohol for a party so they can impress girls and potentially get laid. The film takes you on a wild adventure where teenagers, cops, and everyone in-between is determined to have the night of their lives.
This film is simple and straight to the point, but full of laughs. It stars some of the funniest comedic actors currently working, like Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, and Seth Rogen. I highly recommend finding a friend to share the laughs with and pairing this movie with uplifting strains.
Dank Recommends: Pineapple Express, Fruity Pebbles OG, Pineapple Kush, Girl Scout Cookies, Laughing Buddha, and Trainwreck
Any Studio Ghibli Film
Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki are so incredible that I can’t recommend just one title. Instead, I recommend getting some potent edibles, some great food, and getting comfy on the couch as you go through the Studio Ghibli collection. Some favorites are Castle in the Sky, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and My Neighbor Totoro. The characters in these films are lovable and the stories feel both sweepingly fantastical and very personal.
There’s also a huge variety of movies to choose from, so there’s something for everyone. There are stories about finding love and loving oneself, like Howl’s Moving Castle, as well as more dramatic films like Spirited Away.
The animated food in these movies looks beautiful and tasty though, so whatever you end up choosing, be prepared to get the munchies hardcore. (Unless you watch Grave of the Fireflies. This film will make you so sad that you won’t want to eat for a while.) Studio Ghibli movies are best paired with sweet-smelling strains that are mellow and relaxing.
Dank Recommends: Cherry Pie, Platinum GSC, Blue Dream, Sherbert, Jillybean, and Cotton Candy Kush
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is arguably the best Spider-Man movie ever made. It features teenager Miles Morales, who becomes the Spider-Man of his universe. During his story, Miles ends up crossing paths with five different Spidey counterparts from other dimensions (including Peter Parker). They team up to stop a threat that is endangering all of their realities.
The film is animated with absolutely stunning visuals and expert voice acting. Into The Spider-Verse follows the source material better than most of the mainline MCU films, and is perhaps the best comic book film ever made. You’ll see why this film won an Oscar as well as several other awards.
Dank Recommends: White Widow, White Fire OG, Dutch Treat, Blue Widow, Agent Orange, and NYC Diesel
Maleficent is an absolutely gorgeous Disney film that deserves to be watched while elevated. The movie gives us a different take on the tale of Sleeping Beauty as told from the perspective of the villainous fairy, Maleficent. Starring the talented and beautiful Angelina Jolie, the movie explores the betrayal that ultimately darkened the fairy’s heart and led Maleficent to curse a king’s infant daughter, Aurora.
As Aurora grows, the young princess is caught in the conflict between the forest kingdom she’s grown to love and the human kingdom she’s supposed to rule one day. This film is entertaining, powerful, and entirely centered on two wonderfully strong female characters. This grown up fairy tale is best paired with chill strains that’ll help you relax and wind down.
Dank Recommends: Hindu Kush, God’s Gift, Blue Dragon, Double Dream, LA Confidential, and Berry White
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1
Guardians of the Galaxy follows the exploits of a space adventurer named Peter Quill (or, as he’d prefer, Starlord). He finds himself being chased through the galaxy by bounty hunters after stealing a powerful orb from a villain named Ronan the Conqueror. In an attempt to evade Ronan, Starlord is forced to team up with four misfits: a sarcastic mutant raccoon, a strong female warrior, a talking alien tree, and a burly extraterrestrial who likes to punch his way through everything.
This ragtag team must work together to save the universe and become the Guardians of the Galaxy. One of the greatest things about this film is the fantastic nostalgia-laced soundtrack. You’ll find yourself singing along with all the old tunes until they get stuck in your head. Guardians of the Galaxy deserves to be enjoyed with marijuana strains that are out of this world.
Dank Recommends: Alien OG, Gorilla Glue #4, Fire OG, Purple Trainwreck, Death Star, and Space Queen
There are regular superhero films, and then there’s Thor: Ragnarok. This movie so much more than just another superhero film. While this is the third installment in the Thor franchise, you can jump right in without watching the first two films; however, they may provide you some helpful context.
Ragnarok is a space opera directed by New Zealand comedian and director Taika Waititi. Thor finds himself imprisoned on the other side of the universe and ends up in a deadly gladiator contest against his friend and fellow Avenger, the Hulk. While doing his best to survive, he has to prevent Hela, a powerful sorceress, from destroying his home and people. Thor: Ragnarok is an awesome ride. Pair it with strains that will let your mind wander the cosmos while you’re glued to the couch watching Thor and Hulk smash stuff.
Dank Recommends: Blue Mystic, Northern Lights, Chernobyl, Permafrost, 9 Pound Hammer, and Bruce Banner
Up in Smoke (Cheech & Chong)
Cheech and Chong are giants in both comedy and stoner culture. Up in Smoke is a comedy starring Richard “Cheech” Marin and Tommy Chong. This film follows Anthony Stoner, the stereotypical pot-smoker, as he ditches his strict home life and hits the road.
Eventually, he meets Pedro de Pecas while hitchhiking in California. They end up going on a journey in search of some dank weed, but end up accidentally deported to Mexico. In a desperate attempt to get back home, they agree to drive a van back to the United States, unaware that it’s filled with marijuana. During their adventure, they pick up a couple of female hitchhikers while hilariously avoiding cops that they don’t even realize are following them.
Up in Smoke is the movie that started the whole stoner comedy genre. Movies like Half Baked and Pineapple Express can thank Cheech and Chong’s Up in Smoke for blazing a trail for them. You’ll find yourself laughing for most of the movie when you’re not lighting up with Cheech and Chong. Go for some strains that’ll keep things fun, light, and lifted. You’ll be in high spirits as you enjoy your bud and Cheech and Chong’s marijuana-laced humor.
Dank Recommends: Silver Lotus, Strawberry Banana, Animal Cookies, OG Kush, Bubba Kush, and Romulan
Enjoy the Show!
