Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of butter
  • ½ ounce of your favorite dried weed
  • 1 cup of water

Utensils:

  • One large bowl
  • One medium saucepan with a lid
  • Cheesecloth or a sieve
  • Rubber band or tape

Step One: Decarboxylation

Regardless of which cooking method you use, decarboxylation is always the first step of making cannabutter. During this process, the cannabinoid THCA is converted into THC. By doing this, you’re transforming the marijuana so that it becomes an effective edible. 

  1. Preheat your oven to 240° F.
  2. Place the cannabis on a baking sheet and into the oven. 
  3. Bake for 40-50 minutes, until the marijuana looks brown and dry with a crumbly texture.

Step Two: Combine Butter & Weed

  1. Add water to your saucepan and bring it to a boil.
  2. Add butter and let it melt completely. 
  3. Incorporate the decarboxylated cannabis into the sauce. Cook the ingredients on low heat. 

The butter mixture will need to simmer for 3 to 4 hours, without boiling. While it’s simmering, cover with a lid to prevent evaporation. More water can be added if too much fluid is lost.

The butter will transform from watery looking, to glossy, and finally to a dark color. The cannabutter is finished cooking once it becomes a dark color.

Step Three: Strain the Liquid

  1. Stretch the cheesecloth over a large bowl and attach it to the rim with the rubber band or tape. If using a sieve, simply place it over the large bowl. 
  2. Carefully, pour the mixture over the cheesecloth or through the sieve. Liquid will flow into the bowl and separate from the solid cannabis product. 
  3. Gather the cloth and squeeze the remaining liquid into the bowl. Use caution, as it may be hot.

Step Four: Collect Cannabutter

  1. Let the butter fusion rest at room temperature for 1 hour. After it has rested, refrigerate the material to consolidate. 
  2. Separate the infused butter from the water with a spatula or knife. Discard the water.
  3. Store your cannabutter in an airtight container. With proper storage, the butter will last for up to two months. When frozen, cannabutter can be stored for up to six months.

Measuring the potency of your cannabutter can be a challenge. The strain of cannabis and the length and temperature of heating will affect the THC content. With a bit of experimentation, getting a precise dose can be achieved. Microwave Cannabutter

Creating cannabutter in the microwave is a simple, innovative method to try. This option is perfect for trying out new strains, testing the dosage, or creating small batches. Microwaving is also a good alternative if you want to save time or avoid working on the stove. Be careful and be aware that the microwave makes it easy to burn and overflow the butter. Watch your product at all times to ensure it isn’t overheated.

  • Prep Time: 2 minutes
  • Cooking Time: 1 minute

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter unsalted
  • 2 tablespoons of (wet) weed, finely chopped

Utensils:

  • Standard 1000 watt microwave
  • Microwave friendly mug
  • 1 tablespoon

Steps for Microwaving Cannabutter

  1. Combine the butter and weed into the microwavable mug.
  2. Watching the process at all times, microwave for 10 seconds. Stir, then microwave again for another 10 seconds. 
  3. Repeat this process one more time, checking to make sure the cannabis has not gotten crisp or burnt.

After microwaving the mug several times at short intervals, the butter should start mixing with the marijuana. At this stage, the cannabis will have gone through decarboxylation.
